High School Forum!

I finished my keynote speech for the high school forum on January 15th.  I never thought I’d get a keynote speech right off the bat from starting my career.  It’s crazy!

I have to admit though that I’m a storyteller so to condense my story and mission into 20 minutes was quite the challenge.  I loved the feedback I recieved at Anoka High School and I’m hoping to receive the same feedback at the forum.  The students produce such great questions and are so curious.

Here goes to another adventure in the works and hopefully many more!

No bad boys

I think all parents, like myself, struggle with this.

The Monster in Your Closet

“I’m a bad boy,” my older son mumbled when I snapped at him the dozenth time yesterday morning.

I stopped what I was doing. “Oh, sweetie,” I said, cupping his chin in my hand. “Do you think that because I’m always telling you no, and stop it, and don’t do that to your brother?”

“Yeah,” he whispered, nestling his head into my waist. I stroked his hair, and wondered briefly how I could explain in a way a five-year-old would understand with head and heart why he’s nowhere near being a bad boy.

“I don’t believe in bad boys,” I explained. “There are … actions that aren’t great, sure, but the actions are the problem, not the person. And it’s not even that the actions are bad, usually. They’re more like … unskillful.”

Like me when my words have you believing you’re a bad boy.

Does this look like a bad boy? I don’t see any bad boys here…

Message to America, Once the Wars Are Over

This goes along with my “why U.S. Troops aren’t paid more” post and I believe everyone should read this. Thank you to the author for sharing it with me.

Peaceful Rampage

Originally, my plan was to wait til the wars in the Middle East were officially over and all service personnel were back home before I posted about this but with the recent developments, there seems to be no clue as to when that’s going to be. What I am about to write has been slowly brewing up inside me for the past thirty years and is now coming to a head. I can’t wait anymore so I am going to get this off my chest. Here it comes.

No other country in the world honours its service personnel in war time better than the United States. True there is one exception to this and there is still plenty of room for improvement today but I can proudly say that this is one area where America does better than anyone else. My concern is what happens once the bullets finally do…
